An Album a Day #2026-04
When the World Was Song - EP, by Piers Faccini and Ballaké Sissoko
Notes
Apple Music lists the genre for this record as Contemporary Singer/Songwriter. And I guess that's as good a label as any. But to my ear this EP is blues through-and-through. It's some of the purest blues I've heard in a long time. Piers Faccini's vocals have an elegant simplicity and a pleasing grit hidden behind their smooth facade. What originally drew me to the record, however, is Ballaké Sissoko and his kora, a West African stringed instrument. It sounds to me like a cross between a guitar and a harp, as observation validated by Wikipedia where it is described as a "double-bridged-harp-lute." It works exceedingly well next to Piers' guitar and vocals.
This would pair well with a little drizzle, whether that's on your window or in your soul, so bookmark this one for the next rainy day. All four songs on the EP are top-notch, but the title track stood out as my favorite.
